There’s no fun like pun fun

Let’s face it, life at the moment is like a socially distanced groundhog day movie. No exciting holidays to look forward to, no end of week reward of a night out in a swanky restaurant, heck, even a trip out to the local tip to have a nosy at what others are discarding, whilst you casually strain your abs relieving your 12 year old sofa of it’s duties has been curtailed. All for good reason though, this pandemic shows no mercy and we have a job to do to stop it. It does mean though, that our life feels like one big sleep, eat, work and if you are anything like me boxset binging.🙈

So what can we do to break away from the drudgery of our current reality, and beyond? a fancy bit of technology? Alcohol? Well, yes, perhaps a little bit of those may help but something that’s free, enriching for both our mind, soul and helps reconnects with other humans (in a safe way, obvs!) and can be accessed by all is a little bit of pun action!

The definition of the word ‘pun’ focuses on how we exploit the different possible meanings of a word or a similar word. With our expansive and diverse language, the raw material is endless! However, be warned. Puns are like jokes, try too hard to find them and you will experience a void of all words as they scuttle to the corners of your mind, hiding under the stacked boxes of consciousness.

So what’s the key to unlock the pun fun?! Well, now more than ever, the importance of still being able to communicate with another human being is just that. Important. But perhaps the most important part is to listen, listen and then respond. This act of listening may sound contrived but it gives you a gift. A gift that has many actions. Your focus and attention on the speaker, time to understand what’s really being said and also to see if there was any scope for some literary banter. The result may be pure genius or pure cringe but that does not matter, what does matter is the reaction of the connection to each other that may only last a moment, or continue long after the last tenuous link was milked to extinction. Just beautiful 😆

In summary then, be kind and hook up your social vocabulary skills, explore our language and use it as a tool for fun and engagement with others. Am I not finishing with some sort of pun….na, I’m trying too hard😁
