Don’t worry, this is not some kind of unusual cookery post or how to survive in the wild, but I am sure that if it came to it, perhaps this would be good advice then too (unless the frog was brightly coloured, indicating that it could well be poisonous🤔…) but how we have a uncanny ability to put off doing something that we may not want to face or is ‘too much hassle’ or quite frankly tedious, even though we know it would be of benefit to ourselves and could even be enjoyable.
Why?…
Looking back over the years, there have been many times that I have let slide ideas or actions that would of been beneficial to me, be it mentally, physically or financially. I may of started a project even, but mostly it’s a thought that I have had, that then pings into the ‘to do’ box of my cluttered mind.
It’s not just new ideas that get this treatment, but also our everyday lives. How many times have you thought ‘oh, I must do that’ or ‘ I really need to get that done’ knowing that until said action is performed it consciously or unconsciously weighs on your mind. Our lives are so busy and complex and to survive we balance so many ‘plates’ it’s no surprise that there are certain tasks that seem to be put to the back of that never ending ‘to do’ list.
So why is this a issue?
With mindfulness in mind (ha), being present in the moment is both rewarding and important for the mind, body and soul. Being aware of an awkward or perceived mammoth task that needs to be completed or dealt with, disrupts this process and although you can try and ignore it, unless faced it will nag at you, again consciously or unconsciously. There’s always going to be things that we don’t want to do but have to, or ideas that don’t get further than just that; ideas. It may be a task that feels difficult to start or requires precious time and energy to tackle it, but if you acknowledge it and deal with it, it will soon be the biggest, most rewarding weight off your mind, lightening your soul to enjoy the freedom of now and the potential of your future.
So where do frogs come into this?
It’s a saying that I came across from a famous mountain biker, when asked how he approached his training for the various extreme stunts that he performed. Saying that he chose to ‘eat the big frog’ first, tackling the hardest trick first, meant that he was focused to overcome the biggest obstacle (in more sense than one!) and then once he had successfully managed that he could then relax and move on to the more straight forward stunts, knowing that he had dealt with most difficult first.
What now?
We are not all pulling aerial 360’s (only in my dreams!) and there’s no hard and fast rules to this but the first step is an awareness that you have the ability to make that change. No-one’s ‘ big frog’ is the same, and that’s just fine. Starting a blog was one of my ‘to do’ actions, that I have wanted to do for ages, but ‘never got round to it’, but here we are, it feels great! Now I try and eat the big frog first, and I hope this helps you to too, don’t just take my word for it! Think of something you have wanted to do but not got round to or a task that is nagging you and make it happen, get it done, and move on. Eat the big frog first.🤘
